Jewelled compact once owned by Royalty at Fair

An Imperial gold, sapphire and diamond ladies compact once owned by Queen Victoria’s daughter is among the items at the Harrogate Antiques Fair.

The compact by August Holmstrom, a Faberge workmaster, c1898 was owned by HRH Princess Louise, the Duchess of Argyll, and is valued at £50,000. It is for sale at the Barclay Antiques Scotland stand at The Pavilions of Harrogate Antiques & Fine Art Fair, at the Great Yorkshire Showground, in Harrogate, which continues today and tomorrow.

Yesterday, TV antiques expert and author Judith Miller was at the event signing copies of her antique guides. She is known for her TV appearances on the BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow as well as her work as a writer and editor of books on art and antiques.

She is pictured with a piece of Monart glass from 1930 made at the Moncrieff glassworks in Perth by the Ysarts a family of Spanish glassblowers.

Others items at the Fair include a limited edition bronze statue worth £8,250 by Paul Kidby, who is also the illustrator of the Terry Pratchett Discworld novels which is on sale with Art of the Imagination, from Wiltshire, while Paul Hodson, from Heritage Antiques, Longridge, Lancashire, has a French Ormolu mantel clock c1850 worth £1,290 with a silver dial and eight day movement striking on a bell.
