Jeweller reveals secret of Hirst’s diamond skull

THE inside story of how one of the country’s best-known artists Damien Hirst created one of his most famous artworks – a diamond-encrusted skull – has been revealed.

Jack du Rose, a self-taught jewellery designer from Birmingham, received a mysterious commission in 2006 when a package arrived by special delivery.

A goldsmith in London had enclosed a skull dating from the 18th century and asked him to use his computer skills to re-imagine the skull as a platinum cast covered with diamonds.

Thanks to his 3-D designs Hirst was able to realise For the Love of God which later sold for a reported £50m. Mr du Rose said it was only some time later that he realised who he had been working for.
