Jobs boost as judge backs £20m scheme

RETAILS giants M&S and Debenhams have been given the all-clear to press ahead with plans to open new stores in Scunthorpe following a ruling at the High Court.

Threadneedle had appealed against plans to create a major retail development on the outskirts of the town on the site of Trent Valley Garden Centre. But this was refused by a judge.

It follows a judicial review after the plans were twice passed by North Lincolnshire Council’s planning committee.

Work on the £20m scheme could start in summer, creating around 300 retail jobs and others in the construction industry.

Council leader Liz Redfern said after the hearing: “This is a major milestone and I am delighted at today’s High court decision. It means that this major investment in retail development can finally get underway.

“Retail giants Debenhams and M&S have signed up with large stores and there’s set to be other stores including Boots.

“The development will create 300 much needed retail and a significant number of construction jobs and will attract shoppers far and wide. The development is set to bring around £20m into the North Lincolnshire economy.”
