Judges shortlist 500 entries for gallery’s open exhibition

WORK by professional and amateur artists from across the region came under the scrutiny of judges yesterday in the run-up to the Ferens Open art exhibition.

The normally tranquil gallery was a hive of activity as the selectors, textile artist Sally Greaves-Lord and exhibitions officer Neil McGregor, from Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, whittled down more than 1,500 entries to just a third.

Canvases rubbed shoulders with sculptures along with a hand-made jacket, a rocking horse made from tulip wood and mahogany and a giant skeletal emu, in what promises to be an exciting show.

Hull Council’s assistant curator of exhibitions at the gallery, Claire Longrigg, said: “The Ferens Open goes from strength to strength. There’s a lot of very talented artists in the area.”

The annual showcase, which opens on Saturday, February 12, offers the chance for visitors to buy original art. The prizes include the Friends of the Ferens Award, with a first prize of £200, a second prize of £130 and a third prize of £70. Another £300 will go to an entry chosen by Bohemia Galleries, and a £150 prize will go to the best student entry chosen by an architecture firm, Browne Smith Baker.

The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and on Sundays from 1.30pm until 4.30pm. Admission is free.
