Keys handed over to £19m landmark leisure complex

Contractors have handed over the keys of a landmark new sport and leisure complex in Scunthorpe, ahead of its public opening next month.

North Lincolnshire Council received the keys to The Pods yesterday from contractors Bowmer and Kirkland.

The £19m development in Ashby Road, which was part-funded by Yorkshire Forward, is expected to open in early July and will feature a range of facilities including an eight-lane 25-metre swimming pool, a training pool, a large split-level gym, a six-court sports hall, a spa bath, sauna, steam room, exercise room, creche and cafe.

A further £2m has been spent improving Central Park nearby.

Deputy council leader John Briggs said: “We made a commitment when we were last in power to provide an iconic, contemporary sport and leisure complex for the people of North Lincolnshire.

“We are now at the stage of receiving the keys from the contractors Bowmer and Kirkland. There are still a few finishing touches to be made and we need to train employees and induct gym members so they know how to use the equipment. But we should be ready to open fully to the public early July.

“The building is impressive – it is built to a very high standard and it really stands out, but without being too imposing. A boulevard will link The Pods to Central Park which has undergone a transformation with a new child’s play area, seating, amphitheatre, planting and café.

“It will truly be worth a visit. It’s a magnificent building with brilliant facilities set in beautiful surroundings. It really must be seen to be appreciated.”
