Kick-start for homes on football ground

More than 50 homes have already been sold on the new Amber development at Boothferry Park, the former home of Hull City football club, with 30 properties already built.

Doncaster-based Strata Homes claimed sales have been unprecedented in the nine months since launching the new development – helped by the emotional ties local people have with the ground.

Marketing manager Gemma Smith said: “We called the development Amber because the colours for Hull City are black and amber. The show home designs are based round the colour schemes.

“It has been a fantastic development and I think the emotional connection that people in Hull have with that football ground has helped sales.”

Die-hard fans can take a pick of Legends Way, Bunkers Hill Road and Jensen Mews – after the Danish player Hans Viggo Jensen, who scored 51 goals for the club. Black and Amber Way is another new name for the city’s address book, along with Boothferry Park Halt – recalling the railway station which used to serve the stadium, which was home to Hull City for over 50 years from August 31, 1946 until December 2002.

Prices range from £94,950 to £179,950. A total of 234 homes are due to be built on the 10-acre site.

More than 700 people attended a farewell to Boothferry Park event in December 2011.

Speaking at the time, former manager Nick Barmby, a lifelong Hull City fan, said: “I have fond memories of Boothferry Park and it was the first ground I ever went to. I used to watch the games there and I remember the old North Stand before it was turned into a supermarket. It really was a great place and the pitch was always like Wembley. The club had to move on and the KC Stadium gave us the foundation to get into the Premier League. But you should never forget where you’ve come from and Hull City fans certainly won’t.”
