Labour MP demands apology in election row

LABOUR MPs have hit back at Tory allegations of voter fraud in Halifax at the general election and called for an end to "smears, spin and untruths".

After Calder Valley's Tory MP Craig Whittaker demanded an investigation into "serious allegations" over the election, Halifax's Labour MP Linda Riordan has responded by tabling her own motion in the House of Commons calling for an apology.

She accuses the Tories of putting out "inaccurate and misleading" information and say that defeated Tory candidate Philip Allott, who has handed police five pages of evidence of alleged incidents of voter fraud, is behaving like a "bad loser".

The police are expected to reveal on Friday the findings of a probe into the complaints and Ms Riordan has called for a "full and frank apology" if West Yorkshire Police finds there is no truth in the allegations.

Mr Allott claims his evidence includes people allegedly voting from empty properties in the constituency and people voting on behalf of someone else.
