Lamb earns her Lucky name after surviving dog attack

LUCKY the lamb has become a prized family pet after surviving a dog attack in which 16 others lambs were mauled to death.

The five-month-old earned her name after the other lambs were killed when dogs tore into a secure field in the early hours.

Her owners Mark Whitaker, 51, and Mick Berry, 48, who are both firefighters, say they believe the dogs were either on the loose – or were led into the field with the aim of attacking the flock.

They lost 19 animals in total, including three ewes, after the incident at Elmtree Farm in Oxenhope, West Yorkshire, but Lucky is now poised to live a full life after avoiding the slaughterhouse and the attack.

Mr Whitaker said: “She’s definitely going to be a prized pet for us now – there’s no way we’ll be getting rid of her.

“As myself and Mick started rearing lambs as a hobby she wasn’t going to go the way of most in the first place. Add that to the fact she survived this and it’s clear she’s earned her name.

“She’s quite shaken up, she won’t let us too close to her at the moment but we’ve moved her to a safer place and we’ll be keeping a close eye on her from now on.”

Mr Whitaker urged anyone with information about the attack to contact police on the non-emergency line 101 “if only so we stop these dogs from attacking any other animals”.
