Largest cruise liner in world to sail past Yorkshire’s coast

the largest, longest and tallest cruise liner in the world will tour the Yorkshire coastline this month as part of a special voyage around Britain.

The Queen Mary 2 will sail past Whitby, Scarborough and Flamborough Head on September 19 as she travels from Southampton on an eight-night voyage.

But those wanting to catch a glimpse of the Cunard Line’s flagship vessel, which is also the fastest passenger ship afloat, will have to wake up early as she will sail past Whitby at 7.15am, Scarborough at 8.15am and Flamborough Head at 9.15am.

Captained by Commodore Christopher Rynd, the luxury liner is 147 feet longer than the Eiffel Tower and weighs 151,400 tonnes. She can carry up to 2,620 passengers and cruises at a speed of almost 28 knots.

Her 14 decks feature extravagant dining rooms, ballrooms, theatres, and lounges, as well as the only planetarium at sea.

The Queen Mary 2 will be travelling from north to south, unlike her smaller sister Queen Elizabeth which sailed past some of Yorkshire’s seaside towns last weekend as crowds gathered to watch on the shores.

She will depart Southampton on Monday and the voyage will call at Cherbourg, Cobh, Liverpool, Greenock and South Queensferry.
