Last straws for scarecrows

THE event has seen some of the world's most recognisable faces appear in a tiny village near the North Yorkshire coast – and competitors in Muston, near Filey, are putting the finishing touches to entries for this year's internationally-acclaimed scarecrow festival. More than 100 scarecrows are expected to be entered by the time contest opens on July 24.

Previous years' depictions have included Gordon Brown, Lord Alan Sugar, Nelson Mandela and Rolf Harris.

Festival organiser Godfrey Allanson said: "We get visitors of all nationalities coming to the festival."
