Late director's brother to make first appearance at film festival

FILM fanatics should check their diaries ahead of this year's international short film festival in Hull.

The schedule for Glimmer, the 7th Hull International Short Film Festival, has been released – and promises a myriad of programmes, special events and hundreds of film showings, throughout the city between April 19 and 25.

The Anthony Minghella award for best international and best UK short will be up for grabs – with the judging panel of industry professionals, including the film director's brother, screenwriter Dominic Minghella, making his first appearance at the festival.

Highlights include Curtains, a dark but funny UK film that marked the directorial debut of Julian The Mighty Boosh Barratt, and Plastic Bag, an elegiac film about the life of a plastic bag with narration from legendary film director Werner Herzog.

This year's retrospective focuses on the work of legendary filmmaker and artist Jeff Keen. April 22 sees a night of music videos at the Adelphi while the country in focus this year is Taiwan "the first Chinese democracy".

As a prelude to Larkin25, a series of events celebrating the 25th anniversary of the poet's death, a selection of films based upon his some of his most famous poems is also being shown, including the first screening of Here, with Sir Tom Courtney and a chance to see an interpretation of Going, Going not seen since it was first broadcast in 1988.

With Hull University this year a main sponsor for the first time, some of the screenings are on the Cottingham Road campus, alongside the Festival's base at Reel Cinemas, at St Stephen's.
