Launch of new weight-loss clubs for children

WEIGHT-loss clubs for children in Yorkshire, where one in five 10-year-olds are obese, are set to begin this week.

MoreLife, formerly known as Carnegie Weight Management, is setting up free clubs in several venues across both South and North Yorkshire, beginning on Saturday, April 21.

The 12-week-long courses aim to support children who are overweight and therefore could be at risk of health problems such as diabetes, fatty liver disease, some cancers and depression.

Children aged between four and 17, along with their parents, are invited to get involved with the clubs, which MoreLife says aim to encourage families to “take small, simple steps to a healthier lifestyle, through a series of fun activities.”

Professor Paul Gately, founder of MoreLife, said yesterday: “As the weather improves and summer approaches, we want to help families in Yorkshire get fit and healthy in time for the sunshine.

“We’re really excited to be launching our spring clubs in more locations than ever before and hope to welcome both old and new faces from April 21.

“The club is a great opportunity for families to take part in fun activities whilst losing weight, with none of the stereotypical faddy diets or boot camp-style exercises.”

The spring fitness clubs lasts for 12 weeks, with two-hour sessions taking place on either Tuesday evenings or on Saturday mornings.

Saturday sessions will begin at Doncaster’s Bentley Pavilion, Thorne Leisure Centre, Scarborough Sports Centre and Whitby Leisure Centre on Saturday, April 21.

Tuesday evening clubs, meanwhile, will be held at Doncaster Lakeside from Tuesday, April 24.

Classes for children aged between four and 10 will run from 4pm to 6pm, and a separate class for 11 to 17-year-olds will be held from 6pm to 8pm.
