Michael Adebowale has also been charged with possession of a firearm after being released from hospital, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

The charge came after Drummer Rigby’s fiancée broke her silence to speak of her devastation at the loss of her “loving” partner.

Tributes have already been paid by Drummer Rigby’s estranged wife, Rebecca Metcalfe – whom he married in her home town of Halifax in 2007 and with whom he had a son, Jack, now two-and-a- half – and his stepfather, Ian.

In a statement, Miss West, an Army colleague of the 25-year-old, said: “I am devastated by the loss of Lee who was a loving fiancé. I am extremely proud of him and I am moved by all the flowers and tributes, and that he has been remembered by the nation as the great man that he was.”

Earlier, detectives issued a fresh appeal for information at the scene where Drummer Rigby was brutally hacked to death in Woolwich, south east London.

Renewing appeals for anyone with information about the soldier’s death to come forward, Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford said: “Seven days ago Lee Rigby was murdered in an act of violence that was shocking and horrific. Our thoughts are with Lee’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

“A fast-paced and complex investigation is now under way led by detectives from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command. As part of that investigation, officers are asking for the public’s help. We need to hear from anyone who may have seen Lee being attacked or who may have any other information that may help.”

So far, 10 people have been held in connection with the young soldier’s death, including Adebowale and another suspect, Michael Adebolajo, who was also shot by armed police after the killing and remains in hospital.

An inquest into Drummer Rigby’s death will be opened and adjourned tomorrow.

He died from multiple stab wounds, post-mortem results confirmed yesterday, when it was also revealed the three firearms officers involved in the shooting of the murder suspects could be back on duty within weeks.

The officers and two of their commanders are undergoing post-shooting assessments and the Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating.
