Witnesses to the collision and those who went to help at the scene have also been left deeply traumatised.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier, QC, said Darnell Harte’s mother had said in a victim impact statement: “The family has been torn apart, the heart of us is missing.”

Ms Harte also described how bereaved relatives were now “a broken, shattered family.”

Robbie Meerun’s older sister Rosie described the closeness of her relationship with him and how his death has left her “crippled inside.”

She described how the tragedy had effected her business because she can’t bear to leave the house and had lost everything.

Elizabeth Kimmit, auntie to brother Elliot and Ellis, said her two nephews had loved the defendant “like a brother”.

Ms Kimmit said her family were still unable to put into word how they felt.

Judge Collier said: “The people who came to help - both the neighbours and passers by and also the emergency services that had the awful job of dealing with what they found.

“They too have been very affected by that night.
