Leeds’s newest landmarks are shortlisted for international architectural award

Two of the Leeds’s newest buildings have already made their mark in being nominated for a major architectural award.

The city centre’s First Direct Arena and Trinity Leeds shopping centre have been shortlisted for The Structural Awards 2013, a prestigious international award ceremony which is hosted each year by The Institution of Structural Engineers.

The First Direct Arena, engineered by Arup, was opened in spectacular style last month with a barn-storming performance by Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band.

And the Trinity Leeds centre opened earlier this year and has already enjoyed higher than expected footfall. It has been nominated for its innovative roof structure, engineered by Sinclair, Knight and Merz.

The Awards judges said: “The arena’s design is a great example of good engineering overcoming multiple challenges, while the designers of the Trinity Centre’s Gridshell roof structure have produced an efficient and clean design that demonstrates great skill.”

Y K Cheng, president of the Institution of Structural Engineers, said: “Structural engineers make an absolutely vital contribution.”

The winners will be announced on Friday November 15.
