Legendary eccentric Jake is star of new film

A FILM-MAKER from Yorkshire has spent five years documenting the life of a legendary eccentric from her home town.

Michelle Heighway has shot and edited a 60-minute documentary about Huddersfield man Jake Mangle-Wurzel.

She is hoping the BBC or Channel 4 will broadcast the show, called Mr Somebody?

The former Huddersfield University media student met Jake in 2008 after she spotted his red car, which had a toilet fitted on the roof.

For the next five years she filmed her interviews with him and has interwoven the documentary with archive footage.

Sixty hours of footage has been edited down to one hour.

The documentary is almost finished following post-production funding from the National Film and Television Film Clinic.

Music has been provided by Michelle’s boyfriend Matthew Littlewood.

In the film, Jake, who is now retired and living in a caravan in Huddersfield, reveals some of his own background, including how he battled against depression following a marriage breakdown.

“Jake says it is better to go through life as a somebody than a nobody,” says Michelle.

“The documentary is an in-depth portrait into the mind of a British eccentric.”
