Legion race plans are safe bet for veterans

SERVICE personnel and war veterans will benefit from a special race meeting to be held this weekend as the Royal British Legion hosts a fund-raising event in Doncaster.

The Legion, which works with people who have served in all the armed forces and their families, visits a different British racecourse each year.

This year, Doncaster Racecourse has agreed to help the charity and fund-raisers yesterday urged their supporters to buy a ticket and help them continue their work.

Gates open for the day at noon and the Legion will troop the colour with a parade of standards before the first race at 2.20pm. The racecourse will make its own donation on the day.

After the racing, chart-topping band Scouting for Girls will play on the course, with spectators able to watch from the grandstand, and a gala lunch will be held before racing begins.

It is hoped that the Legion will be able to target those attending the concert and recruit a new generation of supporters to help work with veterans of conflict.

The director of national events and fundraising for the Royal British Legion, Russell Thompson, said: "We're delighted to be in Doncaster in 2010 as the only charity sponsor.

"We look forward to a great day of racing and entertainment, as well as raising valuable funds to help us support our wounded heroes and bereaved armed forces families. The more people who come, the more money we'll be able to raise."

Tickets for the gala lunch cost 75, which includes a three-course meal with wine, a full day's racing, entrance to the concert and Tote betting on site.
