Level of anti-social behaviour slashed

A police operation has slashed anti-social behaviour in south Bradford by 35 per cent.

The crackdown, which is part of “Operation Snakecrest”, saw the number of incidents between April and September fall by 1,727, compared with the same period the previous year in the Bradford south police division.

During the latest purge in City ward, 22 people were arrested, 11 vehicles were seized for having no insurance and £3,000 was confiscated during a raid in which a 22-year-old man was arrested under Proceeds of Crime legislation.

City ward Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Vicky Lawrance said: “People who live and work in the city have highlighted issues of anti-social behaviour as one of their key issues.

“This can come in many forms. However, their main concerns surrounded drugs and the anti-social use of vehicles. Working with our partners and supported by different departments within West Yorkshire Police, we were able to focus our resources around this.”

Officers stopped more than 180 vehicles and searched some in connection with drug offences while checks on their occupants were made.

Police recovered heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis throughout the week, which saw arrests for possession with intent to supply class A and class B drugs. Arrests were also made for robbery, assault, theft, kerb crawling and soliciting.

Some people were apprehended for not paying fines and a total of £1,676 was recovered.

Inspector Lawrance said: “I personally attended a neighbourhood forum during the operation where the feedback from local people was very positive. It is clear that our combined efforts have made a difference; however, this operation is simply designed to bolster our ongoing work and is by no means a conclusion.”

Snakecrest will be moving into a different area of Bradford next month as part of the third phase of the operation.
