Library to become hub for the arts

Proposals to turn Wakefield’s Drury Lane library building into a base for the creative arts will be considered by senior councillors next Tuesday.

Next spring the library itself will move to new premises within the Westgate development leaving the building vacant.

The council is considering leasing the building to the Art House, a national arts organisation already based on Drury Lane, which proposes to transform it into a space for artists and creative businesses.

Should the organisation take over the building the John Goodchild Collection of books, documents and other historical items will remain in its current location with continued access for historians, students and other interested parties.

Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, libraries and sport, Coun David Dagger, said: “The Art House already offers invaluable facilities and support to the district’s creative talent. Their expansion into the Drury Lane buildings would give local people even more opportunities to take part in creative activities and would be another important step in the development of a vibrant cultural and business quarter for the city.”
