Long-haul journey for IT check

Australian teacher Kevin Turner has travelled thousands of miles to see how Crigglestone Dane Royd junior and infants, Wakefield, makes the most of technology.

He spent the day with Clare Kelly, who won the primary school teacher of the year for the North of England title in the 2005 Teaching Awards.

She teaches pupils from ages nine to 11 in years five and six at the school and was able to show Mr Turner the role information technology has during their school day.

Mr Turner was also able to tell the class about his role as design and technology and vocational education co-ordinator at the Scots School in Albury, New South Wales.

Crigglestone Dane Royd has been praised as an outstanding school by Ofsted with no areas which require significant improvement.

A letter to pupils from the inspectors following the education watchdog's last visit said: "Thank you for making me so welcome when I inspected your wonderful school... All the adults look after you exceptionally well and your lessons are extremely well taught. I was impressed with the wide range of interesting things you do..."
