Look back in Humber – centre to entertain young through history

HULL'S maritime history will be holding boredom at bay over the school holidays as Hull History Centre delves into its archives.

Esther Farrow, the schools' officer for the centre, has been looking into the city's seafaring past to help inspire children to join in activity sessions at the Worship Street complex throughout August.

The sessions for over-fives begin with Sail Away on Wednesday – an activity session making kites with ships on to "sail" through the map of old Queen's Dock, which will run from 11am to 1pm.

Next Monday, families and adults can celebrate poet Philip Larkin's birthday with a slice of cake, plus poetry and family activities. Live music will be provided by Man Made Noise, Horse Guard Parade and the Cardboard Cutouts.

On Wednesday, August 18, those who attend the Story of My Life session can design and make a book to take home.

Also starting today is the first of three free behind-the-scenes tours of Hull History Centre. More tours will take place tomorrow at 11am and on Friday at 3pm.

For those wanting to trace their roots family history days will be held on August 12 and 26.

Booking is essential, by calling 300300, or email hullhistory [email protected], or come in advance to reserve a place.
