Lord Lieutenant plans to kick start round-the clock cancer charity event

The Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire will launch this month’s 2012 Relay For Life at Skipton’s historic Broughton Hall Estate, organisers have announced.

Lord James Crathorne, The Queen’s personal representative in the county, will open the round-the-clock charity event where hundreds of cancer patients, survivors and supporters will gather to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Cancer patients from Skipton and the surrounding areas are due to don fancy dress and join family, friends and local businesses to walk for 24 hours round a specially-created relay track.

The event, which starts at 2pm on September 22, will take place in the grounds of Broughton Hall and is organised by Skipton-based fund-raising force, Ribble Valley and White Rose Ladies. The group was set up in 1998 to raise money for research into childhood cancer by Skipton hotelier, Karen Weaving

Following the opening ceremony proceedings will begin with a lap of honour by cancer survivors of all ages led by a piper. It has become a tradition for survivors to start the Relays as guests of honour by walking the first lap where they are cheered on and supported by family, friends and teams from the community who have come together to celebrate their achievements.
