Lord Mayor opens city’s newest bridge

YORK’S newest bridge crossing the River Foss and linking a new £150m urban development was officially opened yesterday.

The Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton, opened the new foot and cycle bridge, which crosses the river from Navigation Road to Palmer Street on the Hungate Urban Neighbourhood scheme.

The 29-tonne bridge will provide a long-awaited link from the Sustrans Foss Island path at James Street and Hallfield Road to the city centre and link into York’s wider cycle network – the envy of other towns and cities across the country.

The bridge is made of stainless steel and wooden decking and has been installed as part of a programme of ecological, environmental and amenity improvements, that include enhancements to the River Foss and Foss Islands Nature Reserve and creation of an otter viewing platform.

It has been paid for by developers Hungate Regeneration Ltd – a joint venture between Lend Lease, Evans Property Group and Land Securities.
