Lord Mayor throws off chains to flex fund-raising muscles

LORD Mayor of Sheffield Sylvia Dunkley ditched her chain of office and donned her fitness wear at the weekend to host a fundraising event in aid of her two chosen charities.

Coun Dunkley, who is a fan of pilates, organised a special class on Saturday and invited people to join her for the activity, which is designed to increase strength and co-ordination by exercising certain muscle groups.

Each participant was asked to pay £10 for a ticket for the hour-long class, which was held at Sheffield Banner Cross Methodist Church and run by Sheffield-based physiotherapist and pilates instructor Sheila Kellett.

All proceeds will be passed to the Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund, which this year is supporting the British Heart Foundation and the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind.

Coun Dunkley said: “The event was great fun, and I thought that if I could do it, then everyone else could too.”

Coun Dunkley is also supporting the British Heart Foundation’s Santa Jog which will take place in the city centre before Christmas.

As well as raising sponsorship, those taking part pay a £10 entry fee which includes a free Santa suit.

To sign up to take part in the jog on December 11, contact the British Heart Foundation on 0845 1308663.
