And when Katy Lomas and Richard Owen set a date for August they had hopes of being bathed in summer sunshine, although their dreams were tinged with realism about the vagaries of the British weather.

What they never imagined was a deluge that gave their wedding ceremony an unplanned aquatic twist.

More than 100 guests were at the ceremony at Wentworth Castle near Barnsley when the heavens opened.

Wedding photographer Jon Dennis said: “We were in a teepee which had cost £6,000 to put up and the rain started falling as they walked up the aisle. It grew really, really loud – so loud we couldn’t hear the vows being said and there was plenty of laughter. But suddenly there was water pouring through the roof and within a few minutes everyone was standing in a foot of water.”

Mr Dennis paid tribute to the Wentworth staff who worked to make sure the whole day was not ruined.

He added: “People ended up eating standing up and everyone started to embrace the occasion for what it was – which was an amazing experience.

“Richard and Katy ended up singing and dancing in the water and the party still went on late into the night.”
