Maize bounty

For the tenth year running, farmer Jim Williams and his wife Sarah are preparing to open their "maize maze" at Jowett House Farm in Cawthorne, near Barnsley.

Throughout each summer, families can visit the farm not only to get lost in the maze but also enjoy vintage tractor rides and traditional games.

Owing to the recent hot and sunny weather, this year's maize has grown faster than usual.

Mrs Williams, seen checking on the growth, said: "The crop is growing so well that I'm battling to create this year's design before the plants get too tall. We are really looking forward to opening on July 17, celebrating 10 years of creating unique puzzles."

After the summer season, the maize is harvested and fed to the 140 cows kept on the farm. Since 2008, milk from those cows has been used to make "Maizie Moo" dairy ice cream, which comes in original flavours such as sweetcorn. Mr Williams said: "It's just about as fresh as ice-cream gets. The cows are milked in the morning, the milk is pasteurised overnight and the ice cream is made the next morning, ready to serve to visitors that day. So cow to cone in 24 hours."

The maize maze will be open from Saturday, July 17 until Sunday, September 5.
