Major half-term rail works to hit York services

Work to refurbish Scarborough Rail Bridge means it cannot be used between February 14 and 23 meaning coaches will have be used to ferry passengers using First Trans-Pennine Express Trains between York and Seamer.

The date falls at a time when many children will be on their half-term holidays and will also affect local residents and commuters.

Phil Verster, Network Rail Route Managing Director said: “We thank rail passengers, residents and visitors to York for their patience as we complete this essential work. The bridge has given good service for 140 years but now needs significant replacement.

“This is a complex project as the bridge spans the River Ouse and is in the middle of a residential area with narrow streets as well as being close to several important rail lines.

“We have worked very closely with City of York Council and First Trans Pennine Express to minimise our impact on both local residents and the travelling public.”

The work will see the old bridge deck of Scarborough Rail Bridge lifted out and a new one fitted. Scarborough bridge was originally built in 1845, and was rebuilt in 1875.

Network Rail say this is the first reconstruction of the bridge for more than 140 years. It says the work is necessary because the bridge needs refurbishing but says once completed it should have a 120-year life expectancy and not need painting for many years.

During the works replacement coaches will run between York and Scarborough every hour. There will be two coaches in each direction each half hour; one stopping service and one express service. Direct trains between York and Scarborough re-start on February 23.

The Hull to Scarborough via Bridlington - Yorkshire Wolds Coast - route operated by Northern Rail remains open.
