Major village housing scheme gets backing

A Scarborough Borough Council planning committee has agreed to the start of the masterplan for 485 homes on High Mill Farm, Station Road, despite hundreds of residents objecting claiming the scheme will swamp local services, lead to huge traffic problems, and ruin the village.

As part of the first phase, 142 new homes will be built, 71 one of which will be affordable.

A Scarborough Borough Council spokesman said that the application was passed with a clear majority from members of the planning committee.

The current plan follows an earlier application for outline planning permission which was granted in October 2010.

A consultation period for the development ran out at the beginning of December and a number of objections were received.

Concerns included increased volumes of traffic, loss of agricultural land, the size and scale of the development, the design of the houses, and the impact on wildlife

Newby and Scalby Parish Council has said that it has several concerns about the development while the Scalby Village Trust has also objected to the plan.
