Man ‘addicted’ to child porn starts second jail sentence

A MAN from Yorkshire with an long-standing addiction to child pornography has been jailed for the second time for downloading shocking indecent images of youngsters.

Trevor Emmett, of Elland, near Halifax, was sentenced in July 2009 to nine months in prison for possessing around 14,000 indecent images.

But only a few months after his release, officers from the Calderdale Children and Public Protection Unit visited his flat in Ashgrove House and found him in breach of a sexual offences prevention order.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Emmett had been banned under the order from possessing various electronic devices, but during the search in May 2010 officers seized a lap- top computer, three mobile phones and several CDs and DVDs.

Prosecutor Giles Bridge said the computer was examined and just over 700 indecent images and movies were found on it.

The court was told that some of movies lasted up to nine minutes.

Mr Bridge said the youngsters involved were plainly showing signs of considerable distress.

A backlog of work relating to computer analysis of images meant that 37-year-old Emmett was on bail as part of the inquiry for a long period of time and in February this year officers again visited his flat.

Mr Bridge said this time police found two cameras and further “naturist” DVDs.

Emmett, who was said to suffer from mild learning difficulties, was remanded in custody in February.

Yesterday he was jailed for a total of 18 months after he admitted making indecent images of children and two offences of breaching a sexual offences prevention order.

Sentencing, Judge Robert Bartfield said the most serious categories of child pornography possessed by Emmett showed the most depraved images of children being sexually abused in the most vile way.

The judge said Emmett had returned to his “addiction to child pornography”.

His recent prison sentence had not deterred him, the judge added

Judge Bartfield said he had taken account of Emmett’s limited intellect and the fact that he was a vulnerable individual who had suffered a deprived and emotionally difficult child- hood.

He said Emmett had also made genuine efforts to try to rid himself of the child porn addiction, but they had not been successful.

In addition to jailing Emmett, Judge Bartfield also imposed a new indefinite sexual offences prevention order which limits his use of electronic devices and contact with children under the age of16.

Emmett will also have to register as a sex offender with the police for the next 10 years.
