Man is barred from every pub in city

A MAN has been banned from all licensed premises in Wakefield city centre – the first such order to be made in West Yorkshire.

John Goacher, 38, of Wakefield, appeared at the city's magistrates court on Tuesday after being charged with being drunk and disorderly on April 9 and April 20. He was also charged with being carried in a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. He was given a 12 months community order with a six month alcohol treatment order and a 12 month supervision order.

Goacher was also given a 12 month Drinking Banning Order on Conviction – the first in the county under new measures which extend the order from being a civil action to a criminal one as well.

Officers from Wakefield Central Neighbourhood Policing Team gathered the evidence to secure the Drinking Banning Order.

The order covers a specified area of Wakefield city centre, including the bus station. It restricts him from entering any licensed premises in Wakefield city centre, being drunk in the specified area as well as banning him from having any open containers of alcohol or drinking alcohol from any open container in the area.

Drinking Banning Orders were introduced last year in a bid to target offenders who commit crime under the influence of alcohol. They allow police and local authorities to stop a person entering certain premises if they have been involved in criminal or disorderly conduct under the influence of alcohol.

Inspector Dick Jones, of Wakefield District Police, said: "This should send out a clear message out to people in the Wakefield area that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our towns. We will use all the measures available to us to ensure that a small minority of people do not cause a nuisance to people going about their business."
