The male driver was behind the wheel of a decommissioned ambulance when it crashed into the barrier of a level crossing and came to rest on a railway track on Friday, July 13.

Police said he has now been charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for the police, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, obstructing a railway and driving without insurance.

He is due to appear at Skipton Magistrates' Court on August 17.

On Saturday, police released details of the incident in which they said the decommissioned ambulance was believed to have been travelling in convoy with a home-made campervan. The campervan was involved in a fatal collision on the A65 between Clapham and Ingleton just after 4pm on Friday.

Police said the 41-year-old was not under investigation in relation to the fatal collision, which left a 28-year-old man dead.

Another man, also aged 28, was arrested in connection with that incident. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs and has now been released by police while remaining under investigation in order for police to carry out further enquiries.

North Yorkshire Police said it was not yet in a position to name the man who died in the crash.
