Man killed and girl of 16 injured in Barnsley crash

A MAN has died and a 16-year-old girl has been seriously injured in a head-on collision near Barnsley.

The 23-year-old man, from Wakefield, was driving a blue Vauxhall Tigra on Lee Lane, in Royston, when he collided with a blue Volkswagen Beetle travelling in the opposite direction.

He suffered fatal injuries and his teenage passenger, also from Wakefield, received serious head injuries.

She was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital, where she was detained.

The driver of the Beetle, a 22-year-old woman from Barnsley, suffered minor injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which happened at 7.15pm on Sunday, around half-a-mile from the junction with Wakefield Road.

A spokeswoman said the collision happened when the Tigra, which was travelling towards Wakefield Road, appeared to partially cross into the opposite lane.
