A MAN died after being crushed as he attempted to fix his car.

Emergency services were called to Belmont Street, off Holderness Street in Hull shortly before 5pm on Wednesday.

The man, in his 50s, was taken to hospital after being freed by firefighters using high-pressure air bags and blocks, but was pronounced dead there.

A police spokesman said: "Humberside Police received a call at 4.50pm from ambulance control informing that they were attending Belmont Street in Hull where a man aged in his 50s was trapped beneath a car.

"Initial enquiries reveal the man was working underneath his own vehicle when the jack holding it up appears to have collapsed causing the vehicle to fall on him."

Pete Baron, from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said it was a rare incident, but it had happened several times in his 24 years with the brigade.

He said: "People have died as a result of this in the past. If you are not getting an expert to do the job, it's essential to use good quality axle stands and never rely solely on the jack."

An inquest is due to be opened and adjourned next week.
