Man missing after leap on to river bank

Police searching for a missing man who abandoned his car in York and was last seen near the banks of the Ouse last night appealed for help to find him.

Chris Baker, aged 29, of
Albemarle Road, in the Southbank area of the city, has not
been seen since 7.15am on Thursday.

He was driving when he abandoned his grey Renault Megane at the junction of Skeldergate Bridge and Tower Street in the city centre.

He then gestured to a woman in the car behind him before jumping over the wall of Skeldergate Bridge into Tower Gardens, on the banks of the River Ouse. He has not been seen since.

Officers say there are keeping an open mind but one possibility is that he could have fallen in the river.

Yesterday high water levels made police searches difficult but a number of inquiries were being made to locate him and police urged the public to come forward with information.

Police say it is out of character for Mr Baker to act in this way. He is described as being white, 5ft 9in, of slim build, with curly, dark brown hair and wearing a striped work shirt.
