Man remanded in custody over air rifle attack

A MAN is in a “critical” condition in hospital after being shot in the head with an air rifle over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Emergency services were called to a house in Handsworth Grange Road, Sheffield, just after 10.20pm on Sunday, May 5 to find a 24-year-old man with a “life-threatening” head injury.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said yesterday that the 24-year-old remains in a critical condition at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Russell Fairchild, of Handsworth Grange Road, appeared before Sheffield magistrates’ court yesterday morning charged with wounding.

The 47-year-old was remanded in custody and will next appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday, May 14.

A 23-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has been released without charge, police said yesterday.
