Man rescued from trench

FIREFIGHTERS have rescued a man in his 20s after he became trapped under a pile of earth in an 8ft deep trench.

The man was working in the trench as part of extension work at a property in Stannington, Sheffield, yesterday when part it gave way, trapping his leg.

Firefighters from Rivelin and Central stations were called to the house, on Spoon Mews, at about 1.15pm before being joined by technical rescue unit specialists.

As fire crews worked to stabilise the trench, paramedics monitored the man’s condition.

The rescue took two hours before the man was taken to hospital by ambulance.
