Marathon effort halted as ex-soldier fights cancer

A FORMER soldier who is halfway through running 100 marathons in 100 weeks has vowed to complete the challenge after being forced to postpone it when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Simon Buckden, from Leeds, had toiled for 46 weeks to raise awareness of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder – which he suffers from after spending years in war zones.

But now the 39-year-old has been told by doctors he must not continue to put his body through such an ordeal until he has fought the cancer.

He said: “I feel like I could still run a marathon but my doctor has told me that my body is not as strong as I like to think it is.

“I’m in the middle of 12 sessions of radiotherapy and yet I find battling the cancer to be secondary – my PTSD is still the hardest thing I have to overcome each day.”

“I am desperate to get back on to my marathon fundraising and raising awareness. Running is my life and keeps me going.”
