Mast ranks star in postcards ahead of regattas for Jubilee

The “workhorses” that once plied the waters of the Humber star in a new series of postcards ahead of regattas to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The collection includes the Beverley-built sloop Amy Howson, the Thorne-built keel Southcliffe and Spider T, built for JJ Tomlinson, of Thorne.

Spider T is heading to London to take part in the Thames regatta on Sunday, June 3; while Amy Howson may be involved in a Humber flotilla the following day.

Compiler Chris Horan, author of Humber Sail and History: Riverside and Waterways Tales and one of the photographers, said: “There appeared to be a lack of postcards featuring the craft and there was a need to produce a souvenir for visitors to take away with them after visiting a vessel.”

The postcards, which have gone on sale at the Yorkshire Waterways Museum, in Goole, the Waters’ Edge Visitors Centre, in Barton-upon-Humber, and other outlets, also feature images of the Humber Keel and Sloop Preservation Society keel Comrade, along with the privately owned sloop Phyllis. Other historic local boats will be added.

Mr Horan said: “We tend to take for granted that these vessels will always be there and preserved by someone, but cases like the Humber ferry Lincoln Castle show this is not always the case. Volunteers put in hours of work maintaining vessels but the suspension of public sailings of the HKPS vessels Amy Howson and Comrade this summer shows there is a shortage of suitably qualified skippers able to give their time.”
