Mayor calls on city to join carnival atmosphere

THE Lord Mayor of Hull is hoping for bumper crowds when she hosts the last major event of her year in office tomorrow.

Hull Carnival combines with a new exhibition at the Ferens Art Gallery and a vintage car rally in the Museums Quarter on a day when temperatures are finally expected to rise to summer levels.

The carnival, which takes place from 10am to 5pm, will include a "green" parade leaving Hull College at noon, which will see hundreds of people walking, cycling, dancing or skating a one-mile circuit of the city centre.

There will also be a cycling arena in Queen Victoria Square, children's activities in Queen's Gardens, a majorettes group in Princes Quay shopping centre, canoes and kayaks at Princes Quay, and an Armed Forces' bungee run and assault course in Queen's Gardens.

An NHS health zone in King Edward Street will offer free massages and health checks.

The Mayor, Coun Karen Woods, said: "Hull Carnival is really taking shape and I've been really impressed with the number of organisations and people getting involved.

"It's going to be a great day out so please come along and make it a day to remember and help us raise as much money as possible for my charity appeal fund, Cash for Kids."

One of the organisations taking part is Scene and Easy Access Disability project, which will have 25 people taking part in the parade on specially adapted bikes as well as staging a play by people with learning disabilities, put together with Hull Truck.

Spokesman Steve Hopkins said: "We run 19 projects so this is a great way to get people to see some our work."

The parade will be led by the City of Hull Pipe Band, and wind its way along Silver Street, Whitefriargate, Carr Lane, Chariot Street, Paragon Street, Carr Lane, Guildhall Road and Hanover Square.

At the Ferens, a 15ft sculpture made of recycled materials, by Johnny White and Amanda Wray, is being launched, while the East Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club will be displaying their vehicles in the Museums Quarter.
