Memorial to lost fishermen to be reality

The memorial – for which local people, including Yorkshire Post readers, have raised £140,000 – will be installed on St Andrew’s Quay, west of St Andrew’s Dock, home of the city’s once mighty fishing fleet by 2014, the group Stand said.

The public will have their say on the design, which will go out to a national competition.

Landowner Threadneedle offered Hull Council a 50-year lease for land next to the Sailmakers’ Arms pub on a peppercorn rent.

Until five years ago the statue was destined for the Inner Bullnose. But vandalism and the likelihood that the site won’t be developed for years forced a rethink.

Chairman Charles Pinder said: “Heads of terms have been agreed with the council and Threadneedle and at the moment it is merely a case of waiting for legal terms which are virtually agreed and putting pen to paper.

“Stand is very keen that the memorial is recognised by everyone in Hull, that it represents the lost fishermen of Hull and is not an abstract representation that no one identifies with.”
