Mephedrone sales drop after ban

POLice have seized 60 kilograms of Mephedrone in West Yorkshire since the drug was made illegal a year ago.

The substance, which is also commonly known as M-Cat or Meow Meow, became a class B drug on April 16, 2010.

Since then, officers say that about 200 people have been arrested for offences relating to the drug including possession and importation.

Police say the sale and distribution of M-Cat has reduced “significantly” since the reclassification and the number of street seizures is falling.

Force drugs co-ordinator Bryan Dent said that even though Mephedrone is not as readily available as it was 12 months ago, the police still remain committed to stopping the use and supply of the drug and giving help to those who use it.

“Unfortunately, while Mephedrone has been made illegal, there are still other ‘legal highs’ out on the market. While the name may suggest that these substances are legal we must stress that this doesn’t mean they are safe to consume.”

He added that police have not seen a rise in the use of other “legal highs”.
