She said: "After a short while I noticed that they were getting knocked over by the waves. Our daughter came out and Steven had been taken further out and appeared to be swimming when I heard a whistle and people were running out to where he was. Then I lost sight of him.

"He was a good swimmer and I thought he was swimming around – then I saw him face down.

"He was washed in by a wave and some people attempted to do some resuscitation. An ambulance arrived and a helicopter came down. A doctor told me sadly that Steven had died."

Mr Whittaker said: "This is a tragic accident."
