Ministers boldly going to seek space pioneers

THE Government is trying to attract a new generation of scientists who will pioneer space exploration.

Ministers are hoping to bridge the gap between military and civilian researchers by capitalising on expertise available at the UK’s universities for studies about outer space.

The Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts, and the Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, Peter Luff, visited RAF Fylingdales yesterday to learn more about its role in space research.

During the visit hosted by the North Yorkshire station’s commander, Wing Commander Rayna Owens, the Ministers discussed a national space security policy which is being drafted.

Mr Luff said RAF Fylingdales is a “vital component” in national security for both the UK and the US. The base on the North York Moors between Pickering and Whitby is used mainly for ballistic missile warnings although it has a secondary role for space surveillance.
