Minute’s applause in memory of Leeds legend

A minute’s applause will be held before kick-off to celebrate the life and career of Collins, who died on Monday aged 82.

Members of the Scotsman’s family and a number of his former team-mates will join in the applause from the pitch at Elland Road.

United’s players will also wear black armbands and a tribute video will be shown on the stadium’s big screen.

Memories of the Leeds hero will feature in the matchday programme.

Collins is acknowledged as United’s on-pitch driving force during the early years of their rise from the Second Division to the top of European football under manager Don Revie. He was voted Footballer of the Year in 1964-65 and in the same season captained Leeds in their first FA Cup final.

The midfield dynamo also had distinguished spells with clubs such as Celtic and Everton. As a manager, he had stints at Huddersfield Town, Hull City and Barnsley.

Glasgow-born Collins stayed in Leeds after his retirement, spending some time coaching at schools in Hunslet. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2002.

Reacting to news of his death earlier this week, fellow Whites great Eddie Gray said: “In my opinion Bobby Collins was probably the most influential player in the history of Leeds United. He will be sadly missed.”
