Mock marriages give primary pupils lesson in relationships

CHILDREN from a Barnsley primary school attended a double wedding on the last day of half-term as part of an effort to teach them about love and relationships.

The pupils at St John’s Church Primary School, Dodworth, made sure they get to the church on time for the mock weddings which saw two six-year-olds and two seven-year-olds make their vows.

The brides and grooms were joined by their classmates who played the roles of the mothers and fathers of the brides, best men, bridesmaids, page boys and groomsmen.

Teacher Jane Race said: “It was a chance for them to learn more about special times and special celebrations as part of their religious education and it’s a good opportunity for a bit of dressing up.”

Headteacher at St John’s Ian Goddard, drove the brides to the church from school in a “wedding car” and a school governor gave a reading to add to the authenticity of the service.

Flowers and a cake were provided by the members of St John’s church congregation and the vicar, Canon Stephen Race “married” the happy couples.

Canon Race said: “We hope the children can learn in a fun and engaging way how the church celebrates love and relationships.”
