Monarchy cynics ‘proved wrong’

ORGANISERS of celebrations to mark the Royal wedding claimed the success of their events had proved cynics wrong and showed the monarchy is still a vital part of the nation’s culture.

While many had maintained Britain is no longer in the thrall of the Royal Family, thousands of well-wishers gathered for events across the region.

A party was staged in the grounds of The Royal Oak in Staveley, near Knaresborough, which is one of the most expensive villages in Yorkshire.

Cheryl Norrish, 26, has run the pub with her partner, Dan Parry, 31, since November 2009.

She said: “The whole day has really lifted people’s spirits and everyone has been going home with a smile on their face.

“I do think that the Royal wedding has proved the cynics wrong and showed just how important the monarchy is to the nation.

“We have had a wonderful time, and people have been amazing. We always knew there was a really good community spirit, but everyone has pulled together to help.”

The party at The Royal Oak in Staveley included a tug o’ war and a three-legged race as well as a raffle and apple bobbing.

A sing-song of classics such as Jerusalem, Rule, Britannia! and God Save the Queen was also staged around the pub’s piano.
