PRS Foundation’s New Music Biennial, which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3, over the weekend of June 30 to July 2, includes everything from chamber opera to jazz, folk to electronic.

Of the works, 13 are brand new. All were selected by a panel of judges. None are longer than 15 minutes so audiences can get to experience as much new music as possible and hear pieces more than once.

Yorkshire-born composers Daniel Elms, Gavin Bryars and Eliza Carthy are working on new pieces which explore the city and its surrounds while Mercury Prize nominated folksinger Sam Lee is exploring Hull’s vernacular folk song.

Other commissions include Simon Holt’s new clarinet concerto for 2006’s BBC Young Musician of the Year Mark Simpson and Emily Hall’s new opera for children.

Organisers say there has been strong demand for tickets so far.
