More teachers worry about A-level marks

INCREASING numbers of teachers are concerned about the quality of A-level marking.

One A-level teacher in four is now worried about incorrect grading and exam marking, according to a study published today by regulator Ofqual.

The survey of 500 teachers, more than 400 parents and children and almost 1,800 members of the public looked at perceptions of GCSEs and A-levels after the 2009 exams.

It highlights an increase in the proportion of teachers who believe the accuracy and quality of marking of papers has decreased in recent years.

More than a third – 37 per cent – believe the quality of A-level marking has worsened over the last two years, compared with 28 per cent in 2008.

Of these, one in four – 27 per cent – is worried about the numbers of papers being sent back for re-marking, or appeals succeeding.

Only 28 per cent of teachers said they now had no concerns about the A-level system.
