"It was a highly emotional day for me, but it was a wonderful tribute to pay Gareth. I, along with his family and friends, am so proud of his achievements," she said.

Gareth spent four years at Wakefield College, firstly on a National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science course and then studying for a Foundation Degree in Sports Performance Coaching. His dedication to sport and studying were recognised at the ceremony.

Mark Helme, who is lecturer in sports at the college's Thornes Park campus in Wakefield said: "During those four years he earned a reputation as a hard working, determined and conscientious student.

"He left the National Diploma with a pass.

"Not only did he study hard, he excelled, achieving some outstanding grades."

He added: "Gareth was a student who blossomed during his time here."
