Motorcyclist speeding at 132mph among road users caught on mobile camera

TWO men have been clocked at almost double the speed limit on North Yorkshire’s roads.

Speed cameras caught motorcyclist Kevin Charles Dixon, 45, of Knottingley, reaching speeds of 132mph in a 70mph zone on the A63 at Newthorpe in June this year. Motorist Jason Dunn, 22, of Broomfleet, Goole, was caught doing 72mph in a 40mph zone on the A63 at Hemingbrough in May in a Vauxhall Astra.

Both pleaded guilty at a hearing at Selby Magistrates’ Court. Dixon was disqualified for 90 days, fined £340 and ordered to pay costs of £45. Dunn was disqualified for 21 days, fined £185 and ordered to pay £45 costs.

The pair were among 11 bikers and motorists handed a total of £3,745 in fines and costs and banned from driving for a combined total of 174 days.

In total 13 drivers and riders were summonsed to appear at Selby Magistrates’ Court after being caught by North Yorkshire Police’s mobile safety camera. The remaining two, a car driver and a motorcyclist, were found guilty in their absence when they did not appear at court. Their cases have been adjourned for sentencing.

Speaking after the court hearings, Insp Dave Brown, of North Yorkshire Police’s road policing group, said: “Speeding puts lives at risk and there is no excuse whatsoever for the speeds we have just witnessed.

“As we have heard in court, the consequences of speeding do not stop with the criminal justice system.

“We have heard how a number of these motorists now face real difficulties in their lives as a result of their recklessness.

“One man will almost certainly lose his job and is on the verge of losing his home, which has had a devastating effect on his family.”

Insp Brown added yesterday: “It is staggering that despite all the warnings of the potential consequences, drivers still continue to drive at such unacceptable speeds,” .

Of the other bikers and drivers appearing at magistrates court on Thursday one motorcyclist was found travelling at 106mph in a 70mph zone, while a car driver was also recorded reaching speeds of 108mph, also in a 70mph zone.
